  • 12 hours of playtime
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • Pair multiple speakers with party boost
  • Premium JBL sound quality

What’s in the Box?

The Flip 5 of course, an Usb cable, a quick start guide, a safety sheet and a warranty card. It comes in a nice carrying case.

Design of the JBL Flip 5

The JBL Flip 5 speaker has a nice cylindrical shape that will allow you to slip it into a pocket or bag very easily. It is made of a strong and durable material, which makes it easier to handle.

First improvement: the Flip 5 is fully waterproof: it is IPX7 certified, which means you can immerse it completely into the water! This one too, if you have a smaller budget.

The speaker can be placed horizontally or vertically, and a wrist strap can be attached to the wrist for easier transport.

Blended into the fabric are the control buttons: volume control, pause/play, skip tracks (double press) and the new PartyBoost feature.

Under the speaker you’ll find the power button, the Bluetooth connect button, the Usb-C port.

You will also find a new power indicator to show how much battery power is left.

Like its JBL Live 650BTNC headset, the JBL Flip 5 is a fairly ergonomic, design and intuitive speaker.

At the same time, it’s easy to use, with easy-to-understand buttons and controls, and a polished look. It’s easy to carry around and takes up little space.

Its design consists of fabric (which makes up the entire area where the sound passes), as well as durable plastic ends.

Where we find the cabinets, rather recessed, allowing them to be protected. This part runs across the entire rear of the speaker, creating a wedge and allowing the speaker to face upwards.

On top of the speaker are the (plastic) PartyBoost volume and play/pause buttons, which are directly integrated into the fabric.

On the back, directly integrated into the Flip 5, is the USB-C charging port. It comes with a power button, Bluetooth button and wrist strap.

The latter is very sturdy and allows the speaker to be carried anywhere, even by the pool thanks to its IPX7 standard waterproofness. Be careful when using it on the beach, as this standard does not provide full protection against sand.

In terms of connectivity, it can only be connected via Bluetooth. There is no jack port or hands-free kit.

Sound

A great revolution in terms of sound is the abandonment of the stereophonic reproduction of the previous speakers in favour of a single oblong loudspeaker.

This loudspeaker also works with two radiators that allow a good bass level at the sides of the speaker.

All these elements allow the JBL Flip 5 to produce a powerful and quite complete sound. People who like powerful and punchy sounds will be served with all the accurate tones that the Flip 5 produces. Indeed, you will certainly be impressed, as we have been, by the power and fullness of the sound the speaker produces.

Passive radiators provide generous bass extension and keep the volume at a high level. We did notice some inaccurate bass notes, however, but we think it takes an experienced audiophile to notice the difference.

As for the highs, we found them a bit acidic and shrill, especially when the volume is high and you’re placed right in line with the speaker.

But, despite these little blunders, the sound ensemble remains well-balanced, especially when you consider the size of the speaker. You can be sure you’re satisfied with the sound performance by using the Flip 5.

On the other hand, if you’re a fan of dense, fast-paced music, your speaker may show some limitations at maximum volume. You’ll get the sound, but not all the specifics of the instruments; knowing that it’s those little details that sometimes make the music sound better and more beautiful!

But if you don’t use the speaker at maximum level, no need to worry, your device will make you dance for sure.

Music professionals agree with us that the JBL Flip 5 has excellent stage clarity and good separation of sound sources, both midrange and treble.

Even the voices are well described with a slight emphasis and very nicely defined. You can therefore liven up your business dinners with soft music as the voices will not attack the eardrums of the participants.

So, you agree with us that you shouldn’t be fooled by the small size of the loudspeaker, because JBL has everything in place to ensure that you benefit from interesting musical experiences.

We also appreciate the fact that a large part of the Bluetooth speaker body has an audio output. So even if you use a relatively low volume, you’ll have good sound power.

In short, we say that the Flip 5’s speaker provides deep bass and a balanced sound with a good level of highs and mids. Whether you’re listening to music on your own or setting the mood with your friends, you can rely on the speaker’s sound performance.

Battery

The JBL Flip 5 is a portable speaker. It must therefore have the correct range to listen to your playlist wherever you are without fear of running out of battery power. Is this the case? Yes, the JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker has a battery life of 12 hours at approximately 60% volume.

So you can say that it’s a standalone portable speaker. It takes about 2.5/3 hours to charge it.

To charge it, it has a USB port and a USB cable is of course included with the JBL Flip 5.

Connectivity

The JBL Flip 5 is a Bluetooth 4.2 speakerphone that provides stable, high-quality wireless broadcasting from your device.

Pairing between your smartphone or tablet and the JBL Flip 5 is quick and easy. It recognizes your device every time you turn it on. It has a range of 10 meters.

During our test of the JBL Flip 5, we didn’t encounter any particular problems such as Bluetooth connection failures.

A little disappointment though: Bluetooth 5 is still not available.

The New PartyBoost Feature

If you like to have even more sound, JBL has thought of you. The JBL Flip 5 is equipped with PartyBoost.

So you’ll be able to listen to your playlist without limits by connecting as many JBL PartyBoost compatible speakers as you like. You’ll enjoy this feature if you love to party, that’s for sure.

For easy remote operation, you can control the JBL Flip 5 from your smartphone or other device via the JBL Connect app. This allows you to manage your playlist, raise or lower the volume of the JBL Flip 5, or check the status of its battery.

The app is free, simple, intuitive, and available on iOS and Android.

The JBL Flip 5, Better than the Flip 4?

The JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker is the latest model from JBL. Does it have any differences with the older version, the JBL Flip 4? Yes, there are.

To start, we’ll tell you what the JBL Flip 5 has to offer compared to the Flip 4. The brand has indeed chosen to remove the jack plug and the hands free kit function on the Flip 5, which can be a weak point for some.

But the brand has chosen a better sound quality. So the sound is better on the JBL Flip 5 than on the JBL Flip 4.

It also has a USB-C port that the Flip 4 doesn’t have, can be connected to an unlimited number of compatible speakers compared to 100 for the Flip 4 (which is not bad at all). The Flip 5 is a little heavier with 300 grams more.

In terms of range, robustness and waterproofing, they are similar. We recommend the JBL Flip 5 if you’re looking for more power and the Flip 4 if you need the hands-free function and the jack plug.

The JBL Flip 5 will survive in a wet environment thanks to its IPX7 certification

Flip 5 Vs. Charge 4

How to recognize these two models? Perhaps not by their shape, as they both have a cylindrical shape with the JBL mark well inscribed on the front of both speakers.

Both models have been designed to be water resistant and dust resistant and are operated by an integrated control.

In terms of sound quality, we note an output power of 1 x 30W for the Charge 4 versus 1 x 20W for the Flip 5.

These two speakers do not have a subwoofer, an active loudspeaker or an integrated stereo loudspeaker. So the sound balance is almost the same, with a few differences.

There is also a difference in the battery level with 4800mAh for the JBL Flip 5 versus 7500mAh for the Charge 4.

With the latter speaker, you will need 5 hours to fully charge the battery to give you 20 hours of autonomy.

The Flip 5, on the other hand, gives you 12 hours of battery life after charging it for 2.5 hours.

Since you will need to charge the Charge 4 battery less, it will have a longer battery life than the Flip 5, which needs to be recharged more commonly.

In terms of connectivity, we note that both models are not compatible with wifi and only support Bluetooth 4.2.

However, only the Charge 4 has an auxiliary input that allows other audio devices, such as a CD/DVD or MP3 player, to be connected via a 3.5mm jack port.

This speaker also has a connector for connecting a 3.5mm headset.

When handling the two speakers, you will notice that the Charge 4 has a feature that allows it to turn itself off after a pre-programmed amount of time, which is not the case with the Flip 5.

Similarly, it is possible with the Charge 4 to place commands via the smartphone (this is a way of using the smartphone as a remote control to control the device. For more details, here is our test of the JBL Charge 4.

JBL Flip 5 Vs. JBL Link 20

In terms of design, it is also noticeable that these two speakers are similar in their cylindrical shape.

We also have the rigid plastic that completely covers them and allows them to resist dust and even water. Indeed, they both have an IPX7 certification and can therefore be immersed in water (attention, no more than 30 minutes).

We notice the robustness of the products and we notice on the Flip 5 the disappearance of the mini-jack input, unlike the Link 20.

Both speakers have JBL connect functionalities. They can therefore combine two or more speakers for simultaneous broadcasting.

These two models do not have a microphone and therefore cannot be used as a hands-free kit.

As far as latency is concerned, we notice a 233ms latency for the Flip 5 versus 400ms for the Link 20. Therefore, you should use a powerful software that can adjust the delay.

On the sound level, the Link 20 has a stereophonic restitution, contrary to the Flip 5 which has rather an oblong loudspeaker which enables it to diffuse the audio in vertical position.

The JBL Flip 5 also has passive bass radiators at the sides of the speaker.

These two speakers also allow for a multipoint Bluetooth connection. This allows you to use multiple devices at the same time for a better sound experience.

Speaker life is also a point of divergence, since the Flip 5’s battery offers 12 hours, unlike the Link 20, which has a life of only 10 hours if you use the speaker at half the maximum volume.

JBL Flip 5: The Verdict

We are coming to the end of our analysis and we can say with certainty that the Flip 5 has its place among JBL’s sturdy, solid and above all high-performance loudspeakers.

The fact that it is waterproof and dust proof means that you can even have it at the beach or in the shower.

Moreover, its low weight also makes it easy to transport it to any location.

In terms of sound quality, it is a breathtaking quality that you will discover with the oblong speaker.

And, the power of the battery, too, will allow you to have a greater autonomy.

We would have preferred that there was also a strap to help with transportation as the icing on the cake. But, failing that, you can put it in a backpack that is about its size.

The Flip 5  is a real improvement from the Flip 4, offering a sound of very good quality and a waterproof design.

We just regret that it has not the Bluetooth 5 and also you won’t be able to make phone calls with it.

But given its performance, we found that it has a very good price/quality ratio.
