You were quietly jogging in the morning listening to Lady Gaga’s latest hit (or whatever, you’re free to listen to anything after all…), when suddenly you feel that something is missing.

You put your hands to your ears and… there’s nothing! You’ve lost your Bluetooth headphones!

Arghh… Don’t panic, we are here to help you…

If your Bluetooth headset was turned on when you lost it, chances are you can locate it with a dedicated application. Provided, of course, that your headset battery isn’t dead…

What Is a Bluetooth Scanning App?

This type of application is available for Android and iOS devices. It is an app that will display all nearby Bluetooth devices and show you the strength of the transmitted Bluetooth signal. You will then be able to judge the proximity of your lost Bluetooth headsets.

If you have a smartphone running Android, try this app: Bluetooth Finder. This application is also available for phones running Windows.

For the lucky owners of a device running iOS, try this: Bluetooth Smart Scanner.

Once this application (a bit magical, I must admit) is activated, it’s time to hunt for lost Bluetooth headsets!

After making sure that the Bluetooth is enabled on your phone (check to see if the Bluetooth logo appears in the top right corner of your smartphone or tablet screen), launch the app and look at the list of devices displayed. Usually, the device name is displayed in full text to help you locate it more easily.

Then look at the signal strength of the lost device: the stronger the device, the closer you are to it. As a reminder, the signal strength is expressed in decibel-milliwatts (dBm). The larger the number (or the closer the number is to zero, in the case of a negative number), the stronger the transmitted signal is. For example, -10dBm is a stronger signal than -100 dBm.

So, the closer you get to your headphones, the higher the number has to go. After a while, you should be able to locate your beloved Bluetooth headsets.
