You were quietly jogging in the morning listening to Lady Gaga’s latest hit (or whatever, you’re free to listen to anything after all…), when suddenly you feel that something is missing. You put your hands to your ears and… there’s nothing! You’ve lost your Bluetooth headphones! Arghh… Don’t panic, we are here to help you…
If your Bluetooth headset was turned on when you lost it, chances are you can locate it with a dedicated application. Provided, of course, that your headset battery isn’t dead…
What Is a Bluetooth Scanning App?
This type of application is available for Android and iOS devices. It is an app that will display all nearby Bluetooth devices and show you the strength of the transmitted Bluetooth signal. You will then be able to judge the proximity of your lost Bluetooth headsets.
If you have a smartphone running Android, try this app: Bluetooth Finder. This application is also available for phones running Windows.
For the lucky owners of a device running iOS, try this: Bluetooth Smart Scanner.
Start Hunting for Lost Bluetooth Earbuds!
After making sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone, launch the app and look at the list of devices displayed. Usually, the device name is displayed in full text to help you locate it more easily.
Then look at the signal strength of the lost device: the stronger the device, the closer you are to it. As a reminder, the signal strength is expressed in decibel-milliwatts (dBm). The larger the number (or the closer the number is to zero, in the case of a negative number), the stronger the transmitted signal is. For example, -10dBm is a stronger signal than -100 dBm.
So, the closer you get to your headphones, the higher the number has to go. After a while, you should be able to locate your beloved Bluetooth headsets.
How to Find Lost AirPods
Since the iOS 10.3 update, Apple has integrated AirPods into its native Locate My iPhone application. Thanks to this feature, you will be able to find your lost AirPods.
If you had previously configured this feature, then it will allow you to efficiently locate your iOS devices in case of loss or theft.
In case you hadn’t thought of it, don’t repeat the same mistake and go to Settings → Apple IDs, iCloud, iTunes Store by tapping on your name → iCloud → Locate my iPhone.
To find your AirPods from an iPhone or iPad, go to Locate my iPhone and select your AirPods from the list.
If you’re on a Mac, go to iCloud.com, enter your Apple credentials and open Locate. Once on the application, click All Devices and then AirPods.
The location of the headphones will be shown in real time on a map, as long as they are not too far away from your iOS/MacOS.
