Do Bluetooth Speakers Work Without WiFi?

One of the most frequently asked questions in the tech world is if Bluetooth speakers can work without WiFi.

Seeing as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are commonly used methods of wireless data transmissions, it’s easy to see where the confusion comes in. Additionally, they can be found on any device, from tablets to smartphones and laptops.

Too many individuals are quick to conclude that Bluetooth speakers require Wi-Fi to work. However, that is not the case. To shed some light on the subject, we shall first start by differentiating the two.

What Is Wi-Fi And How Does It Work?

Wi-Fi, which formerly stood for Wireless Fidelity, has the ability to connect multiple devices in an instant to the internet. This method of wireless data transmission can be found in public places such as cafes, hotels and even offices.

However, it is most common in homes, where individuals can connect to the internet with help of a router. The router is what shares the Wi-Fi signal to all the devices in your house, regardless of any physical barriers such as walls. Hence, a Wi-Fi speaker system will connect to the internet instantly.

Notably, Wi-Fi can be tapped into by numerous devices over a long range, as long as you’re near the signal.

Differences Between Bluetooth And Wifi

Now, Bluetooth technology is very different from Wi-Fi. Where Wi-Fi can connect any number of devices, Bluetooth can only connect two devices to each other.

However, the two devices have to be in close range in order to connect through Bluetooth. According to Walt Mossberg, co-executive producer of the annual Code Conference, the short range between the two devices is often 30 feet.

Once the two devices are connected, they are able to perform different functions. If you have a Bluetooth speaker, you can easily connect it to your phone to perform a function. For instance, you can connect them to share and play music from your phone using the Bluetooth speaker.

Essentially, Bluetooth speakers can work perfectly well without being connected to Wi-Fi. In fact, they do not need a Wi-Fi connection to perform adequately since Bluetooth is already a form of wireless transmission.

The Advantage of Using a Bluetooth Speaker

As previously mentioned, Bluetooth technology can only connect two devices that are in close range of each other. In this instance, a smartphone and a Bluetooth speaker, as long your Bluetooth is on. Despite the limited number of devices that the Bluetooth technology can connect to, it does have its advantages.

For one, Bluetooth speakers are suitable for individuals that are always on the go. Once you are away from your home Wi-Fi connection, your Wi-Fi speaker will be unable to connect you to music. However, with a Bluetooth speaker, all you need is your smartphone to stay connected to your favorite music throughout.

Are Wi-Fi Speakers Better Than Bluetooth Speakers?

In conclusion, a Bluetooth speaker does not depend on Wi-Fi to perform. With a Bluetooth speaker, all you’ll need is a Bluetooth enabled device that will connect to the speaker in order to perform.

Wi-Fi speakers are only better than Bluetooth speakers in one way. You can use as many Wi-Fi speakers in different rooms to connect to the internet. However, you cannot use a Wi-Fi speaker when you are not in close range to the signal. Once you are at least 150 feet away from the signal, you instantly lose connection.

This is not the case with Bluetooth speakers. So, are Bluetooth speakers better than Wi-Fi speakers? The question relies on the purpose you wish to use a speaker for. However, Bluetooth speakers are more versatile, as they can be used anywhere regardless of internet connection.
